Maharaja Hari Singh: The Man Who Secured Bharat’s Crown

Maharaja Hari Singh, the true patriot and ruler of Jammu & Kashmir, always desired that his state remain with Bharat. He believed in India’s unity and integrity, but the politics of Delhi, especially the hesitation of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, delayed this inclusion. Hari Singh had made clear efforts to align with India long before the invasion of Pakistani tribesmen in October 1947, but Nehru’s overreliance on Sheikh Abdullah and his political calculations created unnecessary delay. While the Maharaja sought protection and partnership with Bharat, Delhi’s leaders were caught up in internal politics and personal relations. This delay proved costly, as Pakistan took advantage and invaded Kashmir. Only after the situation worsened did Delhi act, and on 26 October 1947, Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession, officially merging Jammu & Kashmir with Bharat. History stands witness — it was the Maharaja’s unwavering decision, not Delhi’s hesitation, that ensured Kashmir’s place in India.
